Cellist Pegsoon Whang has appeared on concert stages throughout North America, Europe and Asia. She has been a soloist with the Seoul Philharmonic, Colorado Philharmonic and Jacksonville Symphony among others. She has given solo recitals and toured throughout major cities in the United States and South Korea, often partnered with renowned pianists Gail Niwa, Mariko Kaneda and her sister, Hyunsoon Whang.
She has collaborated with some of the most sought-after musicians of our time, such as violinist Joseph Silverstein and Alexander Schneider with whom she toured the U.S. and Japan as a member of the legendary Brandenburg Ensemble.
As an orchestra musician, Pegsoon has worked under some of the most illustrious conductors, including Leonard Bernstein, Sergiu Celibidache, Max Rudolf, Raphael Fruhbeck and Robert Shaw, to name but a few. She was the principal cellist of the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder for five seasons as well as has been a member of the Jacksonville and Utah Symphonies.
Pegsoon is a devoted teacher and educator, she is on the faculty of the University of Utah School of Music and is the Director of Strings at Westminster College. Her students have won prizes in numerous national and international competitions, including Washington International Competition as well as a laureate at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Her former students have become university professors and members of major symphony orchestras, such as the New York Philharmonic.
Pegsoon is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Mannes College in New York, her teachers have included David Soyer, Timothy Eddy, Robert Marsh and Duk Sung Na. She had also worked with Mischa Schneider, Felix Galimir, Harvey Shapiro and Joseph Gingold.
